Finding tranquility is not always easy. Yet, it is possible, even if you’re busier than ever. These simple, powerful ways can help you be Zen.
Finding Tranquility: Best Simple and Powerful Ways
I’m not an expert in finding tranquility, but I know what works for me. So, I’m sharing my best, simple, powerful ways to help you feel Zen anytime. These also work well for reducing stress and feeling calm.
Enjoy a Shooting Star or a Starry Night
One of my favorite and effortless ways to find tranquility is staring at a shooting star. I check the long-range weather forecast to see if there’s any possibility of one. Yet, I can feel tranquil by gazing upwards on a clear, bright, starry night. Besides, this is one of life’s simple pleasures.
The Scent of Lavender Helps in Finding Tranquility
Many know that lavender is an essential oil used in massage. Yet, what is it about lavender that’s so healing and relaxing? Researchers say lavender works in the nervous system to help calm anxiety, stabilize moods, induce sleepiness, and improve memory.
- You can buy dried lavender to keep in a vase in your study, home office, family room, or bedroom. The faint scent lingers for months. Besides its therapeutic benefits, lavender brightens any room.
- Another way to help you be Zen with lavender is to walk through or drive by lavender fields.
- However, buying some lavender oil or scented spray is also a simple way to promote calm.
Relax in the Presence of Your Beloved Pet
I’ve always been a cat person. Some family members joke that I was a cat in a previous lifetime. While that’s an interesting take on my love of cats, I’ve always been good at finding tranquility by spending time with my pet. Ours was a Bengal named Kaya, who looked exactly like the one pictured above. Hearing him purr and watching his playful antics relaxed me.
- If you don’t have a cat, another pet will serve the same purpose. Play with it, show your pet affection, and regard it as a family member. What you get in return is unconditional love and an easy way to be Zen.
Finding Zen by the Water: Let Your Mind Drift
There’s an easier way to find Zen if you live near or travel to a destination by the water. We live close to the Pacific Ocean but have also lived near Lake Michigan and other Great Lakes. The water’s sight and sound are mesmerizing and incredibly relaxing.
- So, whether you sit on a rock overlooking a lake, the ocean, or a stream, allow your mind to drift.
- However, you can enjoy the same benefits by splashing in the water, fishing, reading a book at the beach, or listening to a backyard pool waterfall.
Enjoy a Hike to a Waterfall
Speaking of the tranquil effects of water, another powerful way to feel Zen is during a hike to a waterfall. Amazingly, many states have waterfalls accessible by trails. All it takes is an online search to find one nearby. From there, you can schedule time for the trip and pack your hiking boots.
- While there, spend time viewing the waterfall after you reach it. Part of the thrill of the hike is the destination, so definitely reap the rewards of your next adventure experience.
- You may consider doing a meditation by the waterfall. Besides, what better place to get in a tranquil state than by a picturesque waterfall?
Sunsets are Great for Finding Tranquility
Who doesn’t love a colorful sunset? While some may be morning people, that’s not me. I’ve always been more attuned to the afternoon. Not that I get up late, but I enjoy the sunsets more than a sunrise.
- How do you find tranquility with a sunset? If you have the time, watch it until the sun sets. I’ll notice the brilliant colors changing, staring out the kitchen window while I wash dishes.
- You can also sit outside and spend time with the family while keeping an eye on the setting sun.
- However, my all-time favorite way to enjoy the sunset is in a tropical location, preferably near the water. Kauai, the Virgin Islands, and Jamaica come to mind.
Snuggle Up with a Comfy Throw
One of my go-to ways of achieving Zen is snuggling up with a soft, comfy throw. I have at least a half-dozen of these in my home, and each is well-used.
- For example, I keep a couple on the backs of the sofa in the family room to stay warm on chilly nights (and keep the thermostat lower). A few are upstairs in the bedrooms. Others are handy to use whenever I get cold.
How does a throw help me find tranquility? The quick answer is that they’re luxurious, make me feel pampered, and always keep me warm. As you might guess, I hate the cold. Besides me, guests and family members appreciate these welcoming cover-ups.
Eat Comfort Food
This one may seem odd as a means of feeling tranquil, but hear me out. Remember how eating a food that was your childhood favorite sparks vivid memories? Or how does enjoying a delicious and satisfying dessert instantly make you mellow? You know how to love food, right?
Research shows that eating certain foods elevates mood by boosting endorphins and serotonin (the body’s natural feel-good chemicals). These include dark chocolate, salmon, and albacore tuna (also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids), three of my all-time favorites.
- But I must confess my absolute favorite comfort food is a triple blonde espresso latte with coconut milk, one Stevia in raw, and sugar-free vanilla syrup. Oh, and it must have extra creamy foam.
- However, back to dark chocolate: I make instantly craveable dark chocolate cranberry almond gluten-free, dairy-free muffins. After trying the recipe online, I’ve been making these at least once a month.
